Do You Know... THOSE GUYS?

by Lee Cwiek

Need something to do this summer?
Do you like live music?
I have the perfect night out just for you. Try visiting Olive’s, Effin’s, 007, RiRa, Mardi Gras or The Dockside to name a few and you are
sure to see the local Rhode Island cover band, “Those Guys”.  I was lucky enough to talk to the guys and find out a little more about them.

Steven Sherman-Drums since December of 1996
Steven Burgess-Bass Guitar since July of 2001
Johnny Halloran-Vocals since September of 1996
Bob Costa-Keyboards since November of 2001
Bob Siipola-Guitar since September of 1996

What type of music do you play and is there a song that always seems to get the crowd going?
John: We play pop music. This summer’s song seems to be Train’s “Soul Sister”.
Bob C: One of the biggest audience responses is to the classic “Don’t Stop Believing’” from Journey.
Steve S: The Proclaimers “I’ll be the One - 500 Miles” works with all age groups.

I know the band always plays at the Dockside on St. Patty’s Day.  What is the band’s point of view about what that experience is like?
John: We just did our 4th straight year there on parade day and it was great.
Bob C: It’s an atmosphere of energy that keeps building until show time and the energy level never subsides.
Steve S: 2000 people that start drinking at 9:00am? -- Pace yourself.

What is the best concert each one of you has ever been to?
Steve S: Aerosmith, Mott the Hoople and Slade at the Civic Center ‘75.
John: I would say that seeing Pink Floyd several times in the 80’s and 90’s were my favorite shows.
Bob C: One of the most inspiring concerts I have experienced was YES and most notably Rick Wakeman’s keyboard solo.
Steve B: Anthrax at the living room on Promenade St. in the early 90s.
Bob S: 1981 – San Diego stadium: The Who, John Cougar & Loverboy

What is the craziest thing you guys have seen on stage from a fan? Any out of the ordinary nights you guys wish to share with us?
John: I’ve seen so much. Marriage proposals, naked body parts, fights...and that’s just the band members.
Bob S: I like the guy who can stick multiple beer cans to his head then dance around—how does he do that?
Steve B: I have to plead the fifth...

The next date on the schedule for Those Guys is July 16th at

The Dockside in Newport. To find out the rest of their schedule or to learn even more information about the band check out their
website www.thoseguysnpt.com.

On a side note, I asked each one of
the guys separately where the name “Those Guys” originated.
Not one of them had the same answer and some members didn’t
even know.  I guess it is still a mystery to all of us!
